Merlin 1x13 spoilery review

That episode. Wow. Just. Wow. The het was slightly pasted on, but then the Oral Sex Scene was pretty f-ing blatant.

Then beyond that we had a complete role reversal for Uther and Hunith, with Uther being all sadfaced (ASH rocked this ep) whilst Hunith was all "Yay my son wants to sacrifice himself for me ftw!".

Then we had Richard Wilson's inability to shed a tear even though Colin Morgan utterly pwned this entire ep.

Then we had shirtless Arthur, which, yum. Also, did anyone else catch the 'mom save'? ♥

And then we had Merlin and Morgana. I have thinkyness about them, but I've also got a light fever, so bear with me.

Morgana: is scared. She is so very scared, and it's really interesting that it's become so apparent. Fear is a very good motivator for evil actions (as evinced by Uther), and now that Nimueh's gone, I wonder how far the Beeb and Katie will push that.

Merlin: I honestly don't know whether I saw his darkness coming or not. I mean, okay, Colin pulled it off with such aplomb that it certainly felt natural, but I think I need to marathon the series to see if there are subtle (HA!) hints regarding his hidden nature. Being angry about Arthur and Hunith, fine, but the thing with the Dragon? And then blowing Nimueh to smithereens? Understandable and yet slightly out of left field at the same time.

Things wot I want now:

1) Dark!fic exploring above observations about Merlin and Morgana.

2) A darker S2 that doesn't gloss over same.

3) Any medium of fanwork depicting Merlin's struggle with his selective morality.

Colin ROCKED that ep. Seriously. Just... JUST.

I liked the Gwen/Arthur scene. It felt slightly forced but it was so cute. And you know, shirtless Arthur.

Re: Merlin. I can see it. I don't like fanon!Merlin where he's all innocent and goody good. Cause he's not. He's killed in canon and he's used his magic to kill. And it's not like we've seen him cry over it.

And the Dragon, well, Merlin's trusted it about all his problems and moral dilemas. He's trusted it'd guide him through his destiny and all that shit and suddenly he sees oh so clear, when his mother is dying as a direct consequence of its advice, that the Dragon (apparently) only had its own interests in mind. He feels betrayed and I get that.

Also, I get why he blew up Nimueh. Arthur, Hunitrh and Gaius? That was just too much, I suppose.

Although I enjoyed it, I actually was a little bit disappointed in this episode. Probably because I totally missed the whole Oral Sex Scene thing until someone pointed it out to me afterwards lol. I was just too blinded by shirtless Arthur, I suppose XD

I think maybe we're so used to the show being fundamentally about Merlin and Arthur and how they spin around each other that the ones where it's about Merlin, or Merlin with someone else, or Merlin whilst Arthur lurks in the wings, are a bit of a shock to the fangirly heart. Or something.
