Kids, glorious kids
Nov. 24th, 2013 08:56 amI spend a large amount of time on Pinterest when I only have the school computer for entertainment (no games *sadface*). Yesterday I was looking at the 'Kids' subsection; lots of nurseries, lots of games, lots of pithy sayings ... and lots of pictures of families.
I would like a family. Actually, looking around, I think I would like a large family. Like, 4-5 kids kind of large. Thing is though, I'm 27 (not ancient, but still). I probably won't get to have any kids until I'm 30+, if I'm lucky. And to squeeze 4-5 into a decade is doable (hell, that's how it was done before the 50s) but ...
I dunno. I'm talking gibberish. Blame the cough meds.

I'm on tenterhooks waiting for Durham Uni to process my application for MA English Lit. They now have all the papers they need, so it's just a case of them up-thumbing or down-thumbing. I'm praying for an up-thumb!
Depending on whether I get into this MA, I think I'll still apply to UC Berkeley (Rhetoric Department, Film Studies specialisation). I'm also going to apply to Cambridge (because if you're going to shoot high, you might as well shoot REALLY high) and - possibly, if I like the course and the lecturers and whatnot - Durham. And also Hull, as my reserve choice.
Work (Estate Agents) is boring. REALLY boring. I'm scratching for things to do by the afternoon, but it's an open office so it's not like you can sit on Word typing fic up without attracting attention. This is of Teh Suck. If I can stand to, I'll stick it out until uni starts in September. If I can't ... well, the recession is receding slowly, right?
Work (Pub) is still a laugh and a half. The hours were a bit weird over Christmas, with a couple of early closes because of the snow (which is yay-making!). I'm working nearly 20 hours at the Pub this week though, on top of 40 at Estate Agents. Eep!
Next week I'm off to Cardiff for my gran's funeral. She passed away on Christmas Day, apparently with no pain. She was my favourite grandparent when I was growing up ... and I'm going to stop thinking about her at work before I start crying. I'm sure it'll be beautiful. That is, if I don't die trying to get there via Milton Keynes to collect my sister on horrific icy roads in a blizzard at night after a 60-hour work week.
Is it geeky that I'm plotting potential chapters for my PhD thesis?

Of rolling stones and moss
Aug. 9th, 2009 11:48 pmMy two week soiree has finally ended. Woe is me. More woe is me, for I'm not entirely sure 'soiree' is the word I need, but I am too lazy to look it up. Woe.
Family holiday to Somerset was good. Wet, and cramped, and also wet, and did I mention wet? But I enjoyed it. Second week off was awesome wrapped up in rain.
On Friday I confirmed that I will be starting my second job at Pub on Wednesday. Yay money! I did maths, and it turns out I'll be working a total of 60 hours a week from both jobs, which is fine because Estate Agent requires I sit, and Pub is 16 hours a week. Awesome.
This weekend I have caught up on Star Trek fic. I shit you not, that is all I have done. I still haven't finished, because this fandom is crazy prolific like woah even when I'm being really selective. Like, I will only read genfic and Kirk/McCoy unless it comes with three recommendations from people on my drastically reduced flist. I started off with 200 fics. I'm down to 20. My butt hurts from sitting so long.
On
startrekbigbang I have written a grand total of 3000 words. I had intended to be at 7500 by the end of today, but such is life. Woe.
Apart from that, the only other news of note is that I will be moving house in mid-September. And there's a blissed-out moth chilling on my ceiling. C'est la vie.

Happy ANZAC day!
Apr. 25th, 2009 09:30 pmMy wall calendar says that today is ANZAC day.
It didn't inform me that April 23rd was St George's Day.
My calendar is anti-English.
Today, after work, I came home and had a 4 hour nap. It was spectacular. However, during said nap I received a text from Sister saying that Father was annoyed that I hadn't been in contact.
It's only taken him 3 months to notice, and even then he had to go through my sister.
Oh well. I am writing an email. Fear my communicative skills.
Random, in-jokey fic coming soon to a screen near you.

To all America: Congrats!
To the rest of the world: Congrats by proxy!
This day is so symbolic, and memorable, etc etc. It'll be interesting to see what people make of Bush's presidency in 50 years ... and what Obama's presidency will look like from the other side in comparison. I hope he doesn't fuck up too much.
I have fic (two, actually), but as I'm sort of selfish I don't want to post them until the flood of inaugaration posts dies down. Yes, I am just that shallow.
This past weekend I was in Cardiff, which was wet and windy and cold but also nice to see the grandparents again. Despite their differences, and the awkwardness, and all that jazz, they really do love each other. Made me feel all soft and squishy inside. On the way home we were nearly made soft and squishy on the motorway when my car made bizarre noises (due to a bag stuck in the front-right wheel), we almost careened into a Spanish HGV, and then had to emergency break on the last 100 yards of hard shoulder. Fun times. But the car is fine, and nobody died, so it's okay.
One week until I move to Durham, and I have an interview scheduled for the 28th for a position in telesales. I hate the idea of coldcalling, but I'll do just about anything for money. Also have telephone interview with the AA scheduled for Feb 2nd, and there's still ad hoc warehouse work in Sunderland, so I'm hopeful. *FINGERS AND TOES CROSSED LIKE MAD*

I hope everyone made good use of the extra second added to 2008 last night by taking another shot of your tipple of choice. Personally, I'm looking forward to February 30th 2016.
With no alcohol or family members in sight, I spent the evening wrapped in a blanket on the settee watching Merlin with the dogs. Best New Years ever (no sarcasm whatsoever).
And now, a non-complaint. I am not complaining, because this is predictable and nothing short of amusing to me now. My father, bless his soul, spent New Year in Cardiff with his parents. Nothing wrong with that ... except he didn't tell my sister and I, nor even think to perhaps invite us along for the trip. I've not seen my grandparents since February 2008. Sister hasn't seen them since 2004 sometime. It would have been nice to have been considered, but c'est la vie. Supposedly he is back here now, but when I spoke on the phone to him to wish him well in 2009, he did not mention it, and in fact I thought I heard some disparing remarks about myself from someone on the line with him (quite possibly my stepmother). Which is a bit rude, really. As stated, however, this is not a complaint. I'm ... I don't know, recording for future reference. Starting the new year on a really miserable note, or whatever.
Okay. Something positive.
belenustenebrae - your Xmas present is finished! Will post shortly!
shei,
inmemorybound,
bustahead - your Xmas presents are ... um, in progress? If by 'in progress' you mean they have documents saved in their name and not a lot else, which I do.
Tomorrow mother is taking me to a couple of car traders to see if anything catches my eye. On Saturday we're going to view a 1994 Citroen AX which, if it runs right, will probably be the car that ferries me up to Durham and back again. Hahaha.
And Sister and I will be making the long, arduous, BORING trip to Cardiff for her to see the grandparents again.
HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!

NaNoWriMo Swiss style ended in, well, style this past weekend. We gathered at
belenustenebrae's house for a sleepover that involved cake, alcohol, pizza, pasta, Twister, Singstar, Mario Party, Super Smash Bros, and Merlin drinking games. Best weekend of my life ever full stop amen. Gonna miss these guys so much - they made Switzerland a much more entertaining place than it would otherwise have been.
Going to Milan this weekend to stay with
jackks, which shall prove to be entertaining, especially if angry uni porters yell at us in Italian. Hmm.
And then I fly home to jolly old England on Monday. Can't believe my time as an au pair is almost over. I'm going to miss this family a lot; they've been so good to me. Still, nothing beats a Christmas with your own mother and sister and menagerie.

Oct. 17th, 2008 08:22 amI'm hoooooooooooooooooooooooooome!! Flew in last night (drama with missing scheduled flight, but got transfer to last one to Stansted) and now I am HOME in MK with my FAMILY and the DOGS and it is awesome ... despite said dogs piddling all over everything. YAY HOME.
Supposedly I get to drive the non-power-steering car on the English side of the road all the way to the woods today. Eep! Let's hope I don't drift across the central divide ...

Ordered List
Sep. 2nd, 2008 12:27 pm- Sister arrived last Wednesday for a week's stay and has been nothing short of fabulous ever since.
- On Sunday we spent 7 hours in the train (3 there, 4 back) in order to see the Matterhorn. We took the cablecar up the Klein Matterhorn with its all-year snow and slowly receding glacier. And we went in the highest elevator in Europe, to a height of about 12,200ft. Was AWESOME.
- Last night we went to Bern (best city ever, how have I not been there already?), where we saw The Dark Knight. For all that people have been raving about it, I expected to be more taken in by the movie. It was good, but I don't think I adore it like most people do. Bruce Wayne (as opposed to Batman) is my second favourite character, next to Commisioner Gordon (who is made of utter win).
- Papi Boss is home today getting over a fever, so the girls are mucking about for his attention. Luckily he is taking this exactly as he should, but it's still annoying for me. Oh well.
- I'm working 36 hours over 3 days this week, according to my calculations. It would be interesting to see how Mami Boss works out my hours.
- Night out on Friday? I've done more partying and late nights working full time here than I ever did at uni. Oh the irony.
