Kill me now!

Am looking at US colleges for PhD. UC Berkeley looking good.

Kill me now.

Not going to kill you. Certainly not going to do that. But... another friend who was looking at US universities for PhD discovered that due to US undergraduates not specialising to the extent that UK undergrads did, it would take her seven years to do in the States the same thing that would take her four years to do in the UK, and she'd spend the first few years re-learning things she'd already done that the Americans hadn't done yet. Is this not the case with the subject you'd be taking?

Possibly. In some instances, I think there's the option to bypass the extraneous stuff. I'm sure they must be use to British students coming over. Or maybe I can start here and transfer? I don't know.

GAH! KILL ME NAO.

Dooo iiit! Funding is so much better in the US as they're always telling us here! It takes longer but apparently most places give you PhD places with funding unlike UK where you can have a place but no way to pay for it.

Um, *kills* ?

7 years is an awful long time, like. I have the worst itchy feet ever, and I'm worried this is just a part of it. But I don't know! WHAT IF?!!?

[identity profile] lauds.livejournal.com 2009-05-18 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
There's always conference/'research' trips? ;) I think seven years is more than I could take though.

[identity profile] fadagaski.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely! But I think there are ways to work around it.

Wait, wait, wait! I didn't think you'd done your masters yet? Or am I behind on your life?

The thing is about the US (unless I'm mistaken, which I possibly am) I had the impression funding for international students is difficult/non existent.

...

Come to continental Europe instead! We have cookies and pretty boys!

[identity profile] fadagaski.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, haven't done my MA. Some places don't require it, and those that do - well, I'll cross that bridge if I come to it.

There's SOME funding available. I'm fairly confident I can get myself through school, even though Berkeley is a fairly expensive area.

The point still stands: Europe baby!

*looks at her loaded pistol and swiftly hides it*

...why do I get the distinct impression that somehow, Troy Boulton has something to do with you considering Berkeley?

[identity profile] fadagaski.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
NO. NONONO. In fact, that's a definite off-putting factor.

I don't really care much for that area of Cali anyway. I'm more of a SoCal girl - though I would happily live in Oregon. I'm weird like that.

ooh. I LOVE UC Berkeley. But then, I love Berkeley in general.

[identity profile] fadagaski.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never been. I was in SanFran for a weekend, and I went to Yosemite, but missed Berkeley.
