Working Socially

Have done a bit of research on Social Work (postgrad entry) courses, and narrowed it down to three that I'll apply for next November:

1) York
2) Nottingham
3) Sheffield

Why November? Because I need to have 1700 hours (read: one year) of social work experience, either voluntary or paid, and though au pairing might count for something, it's not quite what they're looking for.

The good news is, voluntary work is as readily available in the UK as ever. The bad news is, I still need a job that pays. Hahaha ... crap.

LOL. Well, they're all 'north', right? And England is only little.

To you, maybe. It's hard for me to get places... so if you go to another, come see me. *glomps*

Manchester, right? I'm due to make appearance there in the new year anyway, so we can catch a cup of coffee or something. :)

I'm actually in my final year at Sheffield Uni :D I love the uni, and I love the city as a place to live, so I would really recommend it!

Awesome! What's your major?

I do Japanese, so I have no idea what your department would be like if you came here lol :D I would still recommend the university and the city!

Yay!

Do you live in student res or private?

What's the union like?

Is public transport good?

/20 questions

I'm in private accommodation at the moment, but I lived in a house owned by the Uni in first year (it was awesome - I loved that house).

The union's good. It's regularly voted the best union in the UK - it's pretty big and they always have a lot of events going on. I spent an unhealthy amount of time in the union. But this is generally because they have free tea and coffee at exam time lol.

Public transport is generally good - there are millions of buses, and also a nifty tram system :D Plus a pretty big train station with lots of regular trains to just about everywhere.

I <3 Sheffield, basically. I could quite easily live here after I graduate.

Hmm! My family's all from north/west of Nottingham, but somehow I've still never been to Sheffield. Will have to give it a proper once over. Thanks for the answers!

Wherever you decide, I can still travel. England is titchy so it shouldn't be a big deal.

*smiles*

Also, thinking about jobs...well...you should be able to get a part time job whilst at University. During that time, as long as you're not too fussy about what the fuck it is that you do, then it's STILL okay to get a job.

*shrug*

You have computer skills so you're not limited in that respect. You're decent in a kitchen also so cooking is no problem (if need be).

Retail is ALWAYS looking.

Anyway, I could go on for ages. But whatever, don't let me prattle on.

Ah, yes, voluntary work, the dream job for lottery winners. No qualifications and you can practically help anywhere. Except for construction sites... I was so eager to help and they were all like "OMG! Don't touch that supporting wall with a sledgehammer!!!". Jeesh, bastards, I was helping and you got all huffy over nothing. And then you blamed me. Ha, as if the building collapsing on itself was my fault.

......

You would totally kick ass voluntarily building a gingerbread house. *nodnod*

Mmm, yum, I would put so much candy on the roof the walls would collapse.
Too bad there aren't jobs like that were you get paid to have fun.
