Last night was exhausting. Mami Boss went to the hospital to give birth (child henceforth known as Baby Baby Girl, 53cm long sister to Big Little Girl and Little Little Girl), so I was in charge of the kids (who were already fast asleep when the changeover happened). But there is something intrinsically terrifying about being responsible for two little children at night, when paranoia runs rife and so many things can go wrong. I didn't get to sleep until gone 1am, and woke up at 6am, and I kept having to check on them in case they'd stopped breathing or had had a nightmare and were too terrified to move, or something.

When you're a parent, it's one kind of fear, that you'll not be good enough or you'll do the wrong thing; but when you're a carer it is so much worse because not only can you fuck up in spectacular fashion, you've got to then face the legal guardians and explain how and why it all went bad.

God. Terrifying.

But in reward, I have the rest of today off work. I intend to do ... not a great deal. Haha. Will hopefully get some fic-writing done (4 fanfics on the go! 1 FFVII, 2 Merlin, 1 RPS). Then, Sat/Sun is an overnight NaNoWriMo TGIO sleepover party! I intend to get royally hammered and enjoy my hangover thoroughly.

Mami Boss and Baby Baby Girl are both healthy and well. I'll see them on Monday, I think. *collapses*

I never noticed it before, but I really am quite a nervous person. We had a rather large confrontation here this morning (parents v. kids), and my hands shook, and I actually cried a little, and now I feel sick to my stomach. Part of this has been exacerbated by poor sleep (accidental 4 hour nap yesterday), but most of it is just me. I am desperately non-confrontational, so to have to sit in a house with that amount of anger radiating throughout this morning really just ruined my whole day.

Made worse by the fact that I could've stayed in bed or watched TV until 11am, and missed the entire spectacle. Gaaah.

Gah. I've been trying for two days to sign up for NaNo this year, and first the servers were overloaded, and now they're KAPUT. Bah.

But in anticipation of said NaNoing, I have been working on last year's (and, soon, this year's) novel. Yup, breaking the rules in so many ways, but all I want is 50k of SOMETHING in the month of November.

So the 30th was the anniversary of my 22nd year on this planet, and it went off pretty well. I worked 12 hours, skipped my German class, received sweet pastry things, CHF50 from Grannie AND ... MY FLIGHTS HOME. HOMG. Pretty freakin' awesome, eh?

Speaking of Canadians (get it?), did you know flyzoom.com went bust? Which sucks out loud, because how else am I meant to get out there on the cheap? Made of fail, people.

And as my wages for last month went in (with no deductions, hooray!) I have decided to go away for the weekend to Geneva. Am leaving Friday, and coming back either Sunday night or Monday morning. YAY FRENCH-SPEAKING PART OF SWITZERLAND.

You know you've lived in Europe too long when: you're forced to communicate in an awkward and broken mix of French, German, and English in order to be understood by anyone.

Why is it always, always 2 steps forward, 1 step back? Why?

It had been, until now, a really great week at work. Monday was quiet, Tuesday was long and quiet, Wednesday was filled with more poo and sick than I had ever seen before (and I was at uni), and yesterday was long but wonderfully fun and creative. Today? I slept in late, necessitating Mami Boss to take Little Little Girl with her to the mechanic.

I mean, it wasn't unexpected. Big Little Girl gave me a cold, I've worked three 12 hour days with all manner of bodily excrements, and I didn't get to sleep last night until about 2am. But the alarm should have gone off at 8.45am! Why did I have to sleep in until 9.15am? And today is probably when Mami Boss will decide to have the fortnightly 'Talk' about how things are going.

Life is a black abyss.

But apart from that, everything here is peachy. How are you?

Am surfing the intarwebz on someone else's unsecured broadband on a bridge in Bern, where it was previously raining. Have had one cat come to see what I was up to.

One day I will bring my bike here and explore this city properly. I really love it. Wonder if it would be possible to live here one day for a while? Maybe go to a college on a summer language course or something?

Have decided to quit au pair job in December. Do not want to deal with girls when their mother is home with Baby, as they become completely different creatures when their parents are around, and Mami Boss does not want/need me to look after the kids when she is home. This was proved on Tuesday when she stayed home sick, Big Little Girl pitched a huge tantrum, and Mami Boss told me to take Little Little Girl outside whilst she dealt with it. Even though the day before she had said that I would be the 'boss', because Tuesday is a full shift regardless of who is home. I can understand why she did this, but as an au pair it kind of made me redundant. So - not facing that when Baby arrives.

I want to learn Spanish, French, and German. And possibly Korean.

  1. Sister arrived last Wednesday for a week's stay and has been nothing short of fabulous ever since.
  2. On Sunday we spent 7 hours in the train (3 there, 4 back) in order to see the Matterhorn. We took the cablecar up the Klein Matterhorn with its all-year snow and slowly receding glacier. And we went in the highest elevator in Europe, to a height of about 12,200ft. Was AWESOME.
  3. Last night we went to Bern (best city ever, how have I not been there already?), where we saw The Dark Knight. For all that people have been raving about it, I expected to be more taken in by the movie. It was good, but I don't think I adore it like most people do. Bruce Wayne (as opposed to Batman) is my second favourite character, next to Commisioner Gordon (who is made of utter win).
  4. Papi Boss is home today getting over a fever, so the girls are mucking about for his attention. Luckily he is taking this exactly as he should, but it's still annoying for me. Oh well.
  5. I'm working 36 hours over 3 days this week, according to my calculations. It would be interesting to see how Mami Boss works out my hours.
  6. Night out on Friday? I've done more partying and late nights working full time here than I ever did at uni. Oh the irony.

Gah, so much has gone on in the past two weeks!

Two weeks in Switzerland, and counting )

Luxembourg in review )

Cliffnotes: Luxembourg was educational, Switzerland is so far extremely fun.
